“I admit I didn’t think the course would be ready on time,” says Nicola Allen, Town Park Manager. "But City Golf Europe did a great job and kept to schedule. They continued working until late in the evenings up on the hill."
The 12-hole hilltop course is proving very successful. About 3,000 people visit the park every weekend, and many of them find their way to the Adventure Golf course. "One of our goals was to create something that would attract more visitors to our lovely park. We’ve achieved what we set out to do by investing in the course," says Nicola.
Another aim was for the course to reflect the region’s local history. Shropshire and Telford are located in the cradle of industrialism. The Ironbridge Gorge, a World Heritage site, is located here. It is crossed by the Iron Bridge, the world’s first ever cast iron bridge. The Adventure Golf course has a replica of the Iron Bridge, as well as a mining wheel.
Telford Council plans to gradually customise more of the holes on the course. Nicola says that having the flexibility to make changes was important when they ordered the project. Now there are plans to add kilns, brickwork and other features to highlight the region’s industrial heritage. Nicola is a keen golfer and loves picturesque golf courses immersed in nature. The lovelier the surroundings, the better.
“We had this beautiful landscape that wasn’t being fully utilised. I think the Adventure Golf course has enhanced the landscape in the park,” she says.
